Conclusion. Nvidia introduced us to the Pascal architecture with GeForce GTX 1080, and it blew us away by besting previous-gen flagships at a familiar price point.
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 is the king of the mid-range, and will be the star of Black Friday 2018. Read our GTX 1060 review to find out why.

The GeForce GTX 1060 is Nvidia's answer to AMD's Radeon RX 480, which redefined what a 0 graphics card can do.
I bought a retail MSI Geforce GTX 1060 Gaming X card last month and it was defaulted to OC mode by default. This is the same as the test version that the press received.

NVIDIA releasing the GeForce GTX 1060 so early came as a surprise to most as everybody expected it to be released in fall, around October, which would have given NVIDIA time to milk the high-end while AMD's RX 480 captured the lower end of the market.

I'm looking forward to upgrading to the Ryzen 5 2600x (from an i3-4130) and i'm happy to see, that this combo (I already have a 1060 6gb) achieves very smooth frames in basically any AAA game at high settings, which is already a HUGE upgrade from playing Far Cry 5 on lowest settings with 0.6 render scaling at only 45-60 fps due to that ugly i3 bottleneck xD

In most games 3 GB is still enough for 1080p high, but it will definitely start showing it's age soon.
RX 570 would take advantage in DX12 games and the extra vram is going to be useful, so go with the 570.

rx 580 and the GTX 1060 6GB are both good cards. They perform decently in comparison to one another. I would not get a GTX 1060 3GB though and the RX 570 would be only if I couldn't afford the GTX 1060 6Gb or RX 580. Also the RX 580 has more ram then the GTX 1060 6GB. If you gaming at 1080P then it doesn't matter all that much between 6GB vs 8GB cards but if you game at higher resolutions like 1440P then the RX 580 looks more attractive with it's larger 8GB frame buffer in the long term for gaming though performance wise it is still neck and neck with the 1060.

GTX 1060 6g vs Rx 580 8g
Which one is better and why? (for 1080p gaming)

They are pretty close. Either is better for an individual depending on some variables i'll list below. What games you play is also important when choosing.

GTX 1060 6GB:

- Lower Power Usage
- Generally Lower Temps (Better cooled)
- Better Performance in most Nvidia GameWorks titles, DirectX 11 and OpenGL games.
- Excellent Overclocker (If that interests you)
- CUDA might be something you benefit from if you work on any platforms that are optimised it.

RX 580 8GB:

- Slightly cheaper (Most the time)
- 2GB of more VRAM
- Better Performance in most AMD Gaming Evolved titles, DirectX 12 and Vulkan games
- CrossFire (Mulit-GPU) compatible (The GTX 1060 cannot SLI)
- Typically the stronger card overall on an average of ~5-8%
- Can be paired with a FreeSync monitor for relatively cheap.

To summarise, the RX 580 8GB often comes ahead in most games today but with higher power usage + temps at that. There are other things on the RX 580 that would indicate it to be better card in the long run due to the extra VRAM, better long-term driver support, better performance in newer APIs (Vulkan and DX12) and of course the ability to add another RX 580 in CrossFire (you might see one cheap). But of course you might be someone big on power efficiency, overclocking or like having a quieter/cooler card which the GTX 1060 does better at. Just go for whichever card has features that appeal more to you and your build. Hope this helps

Which one should I buy a GTX 970 vs or gtx1060?
0 0
C
crispclad 4 months ago
As others have said, the 1060 is faster than a 970 and it has more VRAM. Whether you can get one at a reasonable price is another question. I would personally avoid the 3GB model 1060 since some games like Rise of the Tomb Raider have a pretty massive drop in performance due to lack of VRAM. The 6GB models that are available on Amazon right now are going for about 0. Depending on how much you can find a 970 for it might be the better buy.

Yes it definitely will. Beeing at a starting price of 9 it needs to be more powerfull than the RX 480, which is a little better or teh same as a 970.

primppicalo 4 months ago
The 1060 is the better purchase if you find it at the same price even.

And it will depend on the Power Supply your PC has, plus the space available. The 1060 is rated for ~120W under load, so you should be OK with a PSU that provides a single 6-pin connector for video cards. Re-phrasing that last part, your 12V rail needs to provide >7Amps and you will be more than OK.

Cheers!

Anand's GPU bench is perfect for this question:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1771?vs=1743

as you can see, the 1060 outperforms the 970 in pretty much all cases with slowly lower power draw. so get a GTX 1060 for sure if prices are equal.

1060 6GB will be a tad better than a single 780. Plus it has more VRAM which can help with certain settings/resolutions in games. Both options are solid for 1080p. I would say get the 1060 6GB; slightly better performance than a single 780, more VRAM, and SLI is finickey and doesn't work with a lot of games, so the second 780 will be wasted some of the time.

I would only consider the gtx970 if you can get a great deal on it, like 30-40% less than the 1060. Otherwise, get the 1060.

gtx 1060 vs rx 580
i'm looking or a new card and i'm not sure which card is better 580 or 1060

3. AIB Cards - From the above, we see that the MSI RX 480 is 7% faster overall in TPUs 16 game test suite. From Below, the MSI 1060 Gaming X is 3% faster than the reference 1060 ... so we can can conclude that at the time of testing the MSI 1060 was 10% faster than the MSI 480 in the 16 game test suite

4. Overclocking - We see there that the MSI 480 overclocks 8.6% and the MSI 1060 overclocks 15.1%.. So when the 1060 (10% performance advantage) is overclocked, the relative difference would be:

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/RX_480_Gaming_X/26.html
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1060_Gaming_X/27.html

110% x (115.1 / 108.6) = 116.6% of the 480s speed or 16.6 % faster

As for difference between brands ... the various brands trade wins depending on generation and model line but the EVGA SC is one to avoid as, unlike the competition, they use a reference PCB and referece style PCB cooling.

5. Driver improvements - AMDs driver improvements have improved the performance of the 480 since originally tested. As we can see from the link here, TPU tested the results from the latest driver improvements and found an increase if 2.1% at 1080 p average across 21 games:

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Radeon_Crimson_ReLive_Drivers/6.html

Unfortunately, we have no info on what improvements have resulted from newer nVidia drivers but suffice to say, those improvements have not erased that 10% gap outta the box (16.6% in both overclocked.

6. Cost - Last I looked (yesterday) the MSI 1060 6GB was about more than the MSI 480 8GB on newegg. But there are other costs worth considering

7. Power - There is a significant difference in power usage between the two cards. One of the reasons for the MSI 480s performance,as stated in the review, is because it is able to use more power than many other 480s. That's 75 watts in typical gaming and 99 watts peak

The MSI 480 draws from 196 - 224 watts
The MSI 1060 draws from 121 - 125 watts

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/RX_480_Gaming_X/21.html

8. Power Costs - While this is something you normally wouldn't consider, when cards are very close in performance, it may be of significance to many users, especially those in Europe and especially in urban / suburban locales.

75 watts x 35 hours per week x 52.14 weeks per year x 3 years usage x .131 US average electric cost per kw-hr / (1000 watts per kw=hr x 85% efficiency) = .28

9. Case Cooling - The rule of thump for case fans in a relatively quiet system is one (1) case fan per 75 watts for power. So for comparable interior case temps, you might want to include the cost of an extra case fan.

10. Noise - The 480 is 3 dbA louder than the 1060

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/RX_480_Gaming_X/22.html
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1060_Gaming_X/23.html

So ... that's the data ... it's up to you to look at what you want to do with it ...

- If you don't use MSI Afterburner, then the OC advantage may be of no interest to you
- If you wear headphones, then the noise advantage will be of no interest to you
- Initially the 480 has an apparent cost advantage but the larger PSU requirement and extra case fan eats that up. Considering power costs along with the preceding, the 1060 is the more cost effective buy by far
- If you already have an oversized PSU then the power advantage is of no interest to you
- If you don't pay for electricity cause it's included in rent, then the power advantage is of no interest to you
- But most of all, if those 16 - 21 games that TPU uses for testing are not ones you play, then you need to pay specific attention to how each performs in games you do play... so start here and see how each performs in the games you are interested in.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/RX_480_Gaming_X/6.html
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1060_Gaming_X/6.html

How each individual arrives at their choice will be different for everyone, there is no "wrong choice" here.
====================================================

Now the 580 is a bit faster than the 480 outta the box so it improves its position there by about 5% overall ... thatz still not enough to catch the 1060 when both are overclocked. On the downside, the 580 consumes a lot more power (25%) which also means more noise and heat

The only way to completely remove screen tear without vsync is using Gsync or Freesync because screen tear still happen even when the frame rate is below refresh rates. Screen tear is always the trade off if you want the lowest input lag. At least that's how it was with current mainstream monitors. The old school solution is the best: CRT monitors.

Assuming you do not hit that 3.5GB gate on the GTX970, GTX1060 6GB and GTX970 are quite near in performance. GTX1060 is only about as fast a GTX980, which is not far from GTX970.
However, if you are in the market looking for a new GPU, always look for newer one.
The newer is always better even if the brute power is somehow quite similar.
You have at least always less power consumption and longer driver support (counting from the day you bought it).

Avoid GTX1060 3GB, the difference is not only on the VRAM size!

1060 6GB is not enough of an upgrade from a 970. 1070 Ti is selling for same price as the 1070 right now. Therefore, don't upgrade until you can afford a 1070 Ti.

If you can find one at a reasonable price, get an RX 580. Unless you are gaming at 1440p Ultra or above, 4GB is enough.

Hi Friend, as noted...comparable GPUs, though I'd lean towards the RX 580 for several reasons:

1. AMD FreeSync; though arguably "less optimal" than G-Sync...the chances of your next monitor being FreeSync are higher than nVidia's adaptive refresh tech. This point is mute if you have plans for a G-Sync monitor in your future.

2. More Video Memory; though you'll most likely hit the processing ceiling of the GPU before using the extent of the 8GB VRAM...I'd still call the RX 580 more "future proof" in this respect

3. [subjective] Greater Gaming Longevity; despite being an nVidia fanboy, I've been frustrated at their gimicky support of DX in the past (e.g.,Async-Compute), and their inclination to support proprietary standards as a rule of thumb. If all things are equal, supporting AMD is the best decision as a consumer IMO.

Either way, congrats on the upgrade plans! Both great cards!

If you can get a 1060 at a reasonable price get that. Newegg actually has 3 in right now at regular uninflated prices. They are very hard to find because of the crypto currency craze. Hands down the 1060 is a better card.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125906&ignorebbr=1

This is the only 6 gb card they have available from Newegg. The rest are 3rd person sites and way more expensive.

Fury, by FAAAAAAR (considering you have a good power supply)

In Europe, Fury is cheaper than the 1060, so it's really a no brainer.

With 1060 cheaper than the Fury, then it's up to you

Fury: more powerful, crossfireable, but more powerhungry. Sapphire Fury Nitro OC is cool and very quiet.
1060: less powerful, not SLIable, but clearly less powerhungry. Probably quiet and cool as the Fury, but not more. Mu Fury runs at max 70C and is literally inaudible.

Consider the long run dude.

If you think you'll switch graphic card in 2 or 3 years, then take the cheapest. If you want to take maximum years out of it with the opportunity to crossfire it later on, then take the Fury.

To recall, when games are correctly optimized (which is the case for most of the AAA titles, except GTAV) 2x Fury are quicker than a 1080...

So yeah, I'd go for the fury... It won't leave you stuck in the future as the 1060 will.

1060 imo because in some games it slightly edges out the 780ti, and uses less power and is bit more efficient.

the 1060 is much power efficient and have slightly better overall performance, but users are praising on AMD Free Synchronization and apparently it's worth coping with the Rx 580 extra power consumption, your decision might be easier if you have a free synchronization monitor.

They are pretty close, a mixed bag depending on which game you look at. See some tests here > http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-radeon-rx-580-570-review.

I'd personally take the RX 570 Gaming X, specifically because it has a good amount of VRAM (below 4GB will start pushing the boundaries). Digital foundry apparently had a great time overclocking them too if that is something you do.

Quote > "The RX 570 is the real star of the show in terms of overclocking. The 7gbps GDDR5 memory runs perfectly happily at 8gbps, while the Asus Strix's 1300MHz core (already running 66MHz over reference spec) easily made the leap to 1400MHz. We re-benched three titles and found the 570 to outperform the reference RX 480."

Hope this helps

There are about 5 games in the world that run DX12 and/or Vulkan. There are hundreds, if not thousands of games that run DX11 and older, or Open GL.

Newegg is having a "sales event" right now, and I'm seeing a lot of GTX1060's right around the 0-0 mark. Much better than the 0 GTX1060's I was seeing two weeks ago. The cheapest 390x is still around 0, and the RX480's are right around the 0-260 range as well.

My vote goes to a GTX1060 if you're going to buy one in the next 3-4 days.
