AMD isn't shipping a reference-class Radeon RX 470. As you know, the company did introduce its own take on the Radeon RX 480. But this time around, board partners take the reins.
Should I buy the AMD Radeon RX 470? At the time of writing, buying an RX 470 for £189 or £199 isn’t a bad idea, but its price is just slightly lower than a 4GB RX 480.
The PCB used on the ASUS Radeon RX 470 ROG STRIX is somewhat longer than AMD's reference model, though the overall design is still relatively small at 9.5 x 5.1 x 1.6 inches.
AMD Radeon RX 470 specs. Based on the new Polaris 10 graphics core, this loses some clock-speed and four compute units, but otherwise, it retains the full feature-set of AMD's current top-tier GPU.
Nearly two months back, smack-dab in the midst of E3, AMD CEO Lisa Su took the stage at the PC gaming Show and introduced the Radeon RX 460 and Radeon RX 470 graphics cards to the world—the ...
AMD Radeon RX 470 Built For 1080p 60 FPS+ Gaming, Radeon RX 460 Designed For 60 FPS MOBA Gaming on Full HD Both, the Radeon RX 470 and the Radeon RX 460 utilize the Polaris chip architecture.
These cards, the Radeon RX 470 and RX 460, would further flesh out AMD’s Radeon 400 series with cheaper and lower power options based on the same Polaris architecture that was used in RX 480.
AMD sent us an XFX Radeon RX 470 RS Black Edition True OC (0 on Newegg) for evaluation. Yes, that makes this card more expensive than a reference 4GB RX 480—posing an, er, interesting value ...

RX 570 4GB when overclocked is similar to RX 480 8GB (reference) go for 570 and it gives solid 10% boost out of the box than reference RX 470.

It's a tough one. The RX 470 is close to the RX 480 performance wise and some games do benefit from high VRAM. For example, I'm playing Forza Motorsport 6: Apex at ultra settings and it really requires 8GB of VRAM for a stutter-free experience on that render setting. I always had problems with Forza Motorsport 6 as it really uses loads of VRAM when playing, my experience has been a lot better since moving to an 8GB graphics card in general.

However, most games will be fine with 4GB VRAM and in those games the RX 480 4GB will be easily outperforming the RX 470 8GB.

Well, the board partners only design they custom power delivery and up the clockspeeds a little, you wont see massive gains, only slightly better ,a 470 nitro+ will stilll lose to the worst 480 out there

The 480 is the best card and the best deal, just avoid Gigabyte this time around as they've been having problems with cooling the 480. I'd go for something from XFX or MSI. Unless you can get the 390 for under 0 from a trusted friend that hasn't beaten it to death for months in a mining rig then there's really no reason to buy a 390.

The difference in performance between a 470 and a 480 of equal memory can be closed by overclocking the 470 by approximately 10%, which is more than doable on an air-cooled solution.

The biggest impacts RAM has on card performance is for handling high-res textures and AA. More available video RAM means your card can handle higher-memory textures, and use better AA options. For any game you can buy today, a 4GB card is more than enough, but once 1440p and 4k resolutions become more prevalant, you're gonna want those extra 4GB.

For your comparison, I would recommend the 470. The 480 is only a better card if both price and RAM are equal, otherwise the biggest thing the 480 gives you is more overclocking room. Personally, I would only consider a 480 if I had a water-cooling solution to implement on it so I could overclock the piss out of it.

Crossfire RX 470 & 480 worth it?
Would it be worth it to get a 480 or higher to crossfire with my 470 or would it just bottleneck the higher end card?
0 0
R
reformatpitch 2 months ago
In most cases it would limit the faster card to the capabilities of the lesser card. However, if you used the RX480 / RX580 as the primary and disabled crossfire on titles that don't support it, you would then have that level of performance.

Really though it is best to get a single faster GPU. Sell your RX470 while the value is still higher than normal, and pick up the fastest card you can afford. (Also buying an RX480 or RX580 is practically impossible for reasonable sums right now)

Exact stats are not known and you should wait for 29th of June for them, but leaks place RX470 quite close to RX480. Rx470 is going to be better than the cards you mentioned, and cheaper as well. But by better i mean similar speed to r290 now, but better speed in the long run, way better power efficiency and use of new technologies 290s do not have

i would go for the rx 480, but if you cant I would go with the rx 470. the 960 is last gen tech and amd Polaris is much newer technology and has much better dx 12 support. The rx 470 also should be a bit faster than the 960, and the 480 is way faster/better than the 960(the rx 480 is 970 level performance). also I doubt they will make an 8 gig rx 470, it will most likely just be 4 gigs and no other vram option. if you want an 8 gig card go with the rx 480 8 gig, even if they do make an rx 470 with 8 gigs, it will most likely be too weak to realistically utilize than 4-6 gigs under normal circumstances.

Rx 470 8gb or Rx 480 4gb?
Hi was wondering which graphics card would be better, a Asus ROG Strix 8gb Rx 470 or MSI Rx 480 4gb. The prices after rebate both come out to 0.

I
interestrigil 2 months ago

That's not entirely true. The 4GB RX 480s have slower-clocked memory than the 8GB RX 480s, and as a result tend to have around 5% lower performance. The 4GB RX 480 should still outperform an RX 470 though, so yes, between those cards, the 480 should be better from a performance standpoint.

There are of course other things to keep in mind though, like whether one has a quieter cooler, though if you're just looking for the best performance for the money, that might be less important.

At 1080p, in US, the best choice is the GTX 1060 3GB @ 5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137034

Or the Rx 480 4GB @ 0
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137032

Using MSI Gaming X prices for all proces and performance so as to stay apples and apples

The 8GB 480 is 5 and the 6GB 1060 was 5 also but is sold out on newegg

Which you choose, depends on what games you play.... but keep in mind the following:

Based upon results of tehpowerups game test suite ....using the GTX 1060 as the baseline

a) The MSI RX 480 8GB is 7% slower, on average, than the 1060 reference @ 1080p ... it overclocks 8.6% beyond that for an overall 1% advantage over the 1060
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/RX_480_Gaming_X/23.html

b) The MSI 1060 6GB is 3% faster, on average, than the 1060 reference @ 1080p ... it overclocks 15.1% beyond that for an overall 19% advantage over the 1060
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1060_OC/23.html

c) The 1060 3 GB runs about 6% slower, on average, than the 1060 reference @ 1080p ... it overclocks 14.5% beyond that for an overall 8% advantage over the reference 1060
\https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1060_Gaming_X_3_GB/29.html

So ranking the 3, based upon the overall performance in the entire test suite:

MSI 480 Gaming X 8GB = 101% of the reference 1060 for 5
MSI 1060 Gaming X 3GB = 108% of the reference 1060 for 5
MSI 1060 Gaming X 6GB = 119% of the reference 1060 for ? (whatever it is when back in stock (last saw @ 5)

I have not seen comparative test results for the 4GB 480 on TPU.... but a) early Sapphire cards could be flashed from 4 to 8GN (supposedly reviewer samples only but few escaped in the wild) and b) on the 10690, cutting the RAM in half for the 1060 cost 7% in performance at 1080p. If we assume the same 7% hit on the 480 from 8 to 4GB, that was seen halving the 1060s, that **might** make put the MSI 480 Gaming X 4GB = 94% (0) of the reference 1060 for 5 but that's a logical guess.

As i said above, best to start here and look at what games you play and how each card under consideration does against each other:

The i5-7500 + RX 470 would be the more optimal choice. The quad core would be needed for many new AAA games, a few MMOs, and it would be harder for you to upgrade your CPU down the line than your GPU. If old 2nd gen i5s and 750 ti's are still kicking gaming on 1080p, your i5-7500 and RX 470 will do great.

Well ryzen 5 performance is unknown, just wait and see what it will have to offer. intels non k i5 will have pretty similar performance to ryzen 5. AMD throw so hard past 8-10 years so im a bit sceptical to it, but time will show what is real performance of ryzen cpu once they get fully or as close to full optimized. Recent updates of ryzen showed improved performance on ryzen 7. You should wait anyway because soon (by the end of this month) rx 500 (aka vega) series will come out. So my suggestion wait until Mai and then decide what to get.
Ofc u need a bit more than 4gb for mods on fallout or skyrim, but even 4gb wont be a big issue. U not gonna play only these 2 games all the year are u?

Hi,

I dont think it will matter. If you buy 470 OC and compare it with 480 it wont mean anything because you can OC the 480. However, I found this link where they compare 470 OC vs 480 and seems 480s still beats the 470 OC. Also note OC will need a better cooling otherwise it will end with high temps and low fps.

http://www.pcgamesn.com/AMD-RX-470-vs-RX-480

The link below also compare 470 vs 480 vs 470OC (MSI), and seems the difference between 480 vs 470OC is not that big

The best would be probably GTX 1060.
If your CPU is overclocked, there will be no major "bottleneck" and "bottlenecks" are not damaging parts. It just means that there is something limiting application performance to some degree.
What is the power supply in your computer ?

Look for benchmarks of the games YOU play.
The best card may well differ.
as to vram, I think it should be a non issue.
VRAM has become a marketing issue.
My understanding is that vram is more of a performance issue than a functional issue.
A game needs to have most of the data in vram that it uses most of the time.
Somewhat like real ram.
If a game needs something not in vram, it needs to get it across the pcie boundary
hopefully from real ram and hopefully not from a hard drive.
It is not informative to know to what level the available vram is filled.
Possibly much of what is there is not needed.
What is not known is the rate of vram exchange.
Vram is managed by the Graphics card driver, and by the game. There may be differences in effectiveness between amd and nvidia cards.
And differences between games.
Here is an older performance test comparing 2gb with 4gb vram.
http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Video-Card-Performance-2GB-vs-4GB-Memory-154/
Spoiler... not a significant difference.
A more current set of tests shows the same results:
http://www.techspot.com/review/1114-vram-comparison-test/page5.html

And... no game maker wants to limit their market by
requiring huge amounts of vram. The vram you see will be appropriate to the particular card.

r9 380 or wait for rx 470?
Hello,

I'm thinking of either getting a r9 380 or the yet unannounced rx 470 (maybe it will announced soon). The thing is that the rx 480 is out of my price range and I have found an xfx r9 380 for £127, which is quite cheap, considering other r9 380 are £150+.

Sapphire Rx 470 nitro or gtx 970g1
Hi
I am torn between sapphire Rx 470 nitro + 4gb and gigabyte gtx 970 g1.
The second card(gtx970) is second hand but almost cheaper than Rx 470.
Given the fact that amd is better than nvidia at directx 12 and vulkan
What do you think I have to do?
Thanks

COnsidering the horsepower difference between the two, i find only no. 4 to be valid. And yeah, if you plan on buying a monitor, getting the 470 because FreeSync monitors are way cheaper is very much merited because adaptive sync absolutely rocks.

RX 470 vs RX 480
RX 470 4GB VS RX 480 4GB

Is it worth the price/performance diffrence for a build right now, and which one to go for looking to price/performance. ( Price diffrence here: 21euro)

Are there maybe better cards out there for the same price? (I live in europe)

How big of a percentage of the total cost is 21 euros? For instance, if the 470 is 150 euros and the 480 is 171, I'd go with the 470. If the 470 is 200 euros and the 480 is 221, I'd go with the 480. In essence, the more you're spending, the less significant 21 euros becomes.

GTX 950 better than RX 470??
so, I play minecraft and some other games on my pc I have a rx 470 and a i5 6500, And my friend has a GTX 950 and a i5 6500. So, in minecraft he gets around 400-600 fps while I get 200-400 with the newist drivers for the MSI RX 470. So yeah if any one can tell me how to fix my fps problem thnx!

The 470 is the better card. As to why this is happening, it's hard for me to say without knowing every detail of game and computer. For instance, maybe you run at higher settings than he does and with more mods? Maybe your computer has many unnecessary processes running in the background while his computer is tuned for gaming?

You can start by testing your computer. Run some benchmarks to make sure you are getting the performance your CPU/GPU combo should be giving you. Don't use Minecraft as a benchmark.

RX 470 8gb vs RX 480 4gb
Wondering which one would give me the best performance for my build? https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/WcZ7M8 The 470 is 9, while the 480 is only 9. Does the VRAM outweigh the cost? This is for 1080p gaming only

480 4gb. Very few games use 3gb VRAM at 1080p so 4Gb should be good for some time and the 480 is a significantly more powerful card. The 470 is no way strong enough to ever utilise 8Gb, its a marketing gimmick.
