Our Verdict: Upgrading from GTX 980 Ti to GTX 1070 Ti is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for GTX 1070 Ti .

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti / Core i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz

With some tuning, the GTX 1070 Ti makes the most sense for gamers with 4K monitors. Though serious gamers hardly play at 4k. In terms of memory, the GTX 1070 Ti 's 8192 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks. In short the performance is exceptional, there's no question that this is one of the most powerful single GPU out there in 2017 .

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti / Core i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz

It is worth noting that the GTX 980 Ti is a very power hungry card and requires a decent power supply unit. In terms of memory, the GTX 980 Ti 's 6144 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks. Deciding whether to invest so much money in a high-end GPU like GTX 980 Ti requires careful thought. In short the performance is exceptional, there's no question that this is one of the most powerful single GPU out there in 2015 .

If they are the same price the 1070. If the 1070 is 450 and the 980ti is say 350 get the 980ti. I have a friend that just got a evga gtx 980ti classified for 0 if you can find that take it.

GTX 1070, it's going to be significantly faster in a few months when they get the drivers working better for them. Nvidia isn't exactly known for continuing to optimize older architectures when newer ones are out. I bought a used 980 ti a month ago for 0 and I personally wouldn't pay more than 0-300 for one if you were in the market for a card. If you're buying new then the 980 ti is a terrible value compared to the 1070 IMO.

Hey there folks!

I got Asus 980 ti reference card and i love it, but i have someone who does a deal to a ROG OC 1070. Should i trade?

Yes, the cooler on the 1070 is far ahead of the blower-cooler on the 980ti.

Performance aside, if that's your deal breaker then go for it. It will just be a loss for the other guy.

Should i get a gtx 1070 or gtx 980ti? I can get the latter for about 70$ less than 1070. I've seen it being head to head with gtx 1070 ti after OC.

Then go for the 980ti. It is still quite powerful and should handle that resolution pretty well.

AFAIK, it should not bottleneck considerably. There will always be a bottleneck but since you have OC'ed it, it should give some good performance.

Need a quick consensus on which card is a better performer. The Gainward GTX 1070 dual-fan (think its the base version for Gainward's 1070s) or the EVGA GTX 1070 SC ACX 2.0?

Cheers.

The Palit Jetstream is only 5 quid more than the 980TI and levels with a Gainward Phoenix
I'd go with that one

Which One is better?
The 980 Ti (Zotac Amp Omega~390€) It's 80 euros cheaper than the cheapest 1070 (EVGA FTW~470€) I could find.
Is the extra money worth it, If the answer is yes, why?

teddymetal 1 month ago
they were about equal. but 1070 will have extra 2GB more VRAM than 980Ti. and probably will also fare better in DX12 title using Async because of dynamic load balancing that has been introduced with Pascal architecture.

which is faster? ive seen so many benchmarks with these two paired against each other but some people show that the 1070 is faster while others show that the 980 ti is faster than the 1070. so in general, which is better in gaming?

When you were comparing the benchmarks were the games operating with exactly the same settings? If the same settings were not being used then your comparisons are meaningless.

If the same test platform, game and graphics settings are being used then the reference design GeForce GTX 1070 is definitely faster than the reference design GeForce GTX 980 Ti.

A quality 500w will support a 1070, but not a 980 ti.

Key word being quality wich the gigabyte unit is not.

Between the two cards I would opt for the 1070 because it has dx 12, hdmi 2.0 and uses less power while being near the same performance level.
You also likley find a new 1070 for cheaper then a used 980 ti.

Hi, i have a GTX 970, i want something to perform better but i also do not want to spend 0 on a graphics card, i can get a 980ti for about 0-0 currently. I have looked up numerous videos and they are pretty comparable FPS wise in most games i play. Should i just get a 980 Ti for the price?

The 980 Ti might be the better option for the price in your case. Check out a few "GTX 980 Ti vs GTX 1070" benchmark videos online and see what you think. I'm assuming the 980 Ti that you're looking at is in good condition and hasn't been carelessly OC'ed.

So I have a gtx 970 and I was planning to sell it and get the 1070 when it comes out and guessing it will cost around 450 ,460 usd(in Bulgaria) but today I saw a guy selling his msi gtx 980 ti for 430 usd which I can probably bring down to 420 usd.So shoud I get the 980ti or wait for the gtx 1070 which will be probably overpriced in Bulgaria ?

well it´s true gtx 970 is good enough for 1080p gaming for now .
and you are not in need to upgrade your card just yet .
one more reason to be patient and wait until price drops a bit after the initial release .
just scout the market and wait for the right opportunity to buy .

what processor do you have ? what is the brand (and model) of your power supply ?

Hey guys, I know this question has been asked alot of times but I want your advice.
I was planning on getting an 1070 with waterblock, and my friend gave me this deal windforce gtx 980ti with waterblock on it for 400€ which is really good deal. Now I know 1070 wins from 980 ti reference. But some 980 ti's win from 1070 like matrix and lighting. What do you think?

Good evening,
I currently have a Gtx 970 in my rig and I've been kicking around the idea of upgrading. I was able to find an Evga Gtx 980 ti hybrid used in my area for 0. But I've also been thinking of getting the Gtx 1070 but can't find one under 0. My question is would it be worth picking up the 980 ti hybrid at that price if they perform similarly at 1440p?

Get the Gigabyte GTX 1070 for 0. It as a great card and better than the 980 Ti, but if you are strapped for cash, the used 980 Ti will be fine. Just make sure it has no burn marks, etc.

I'm upgrading from a crappy GTX 960 2GB for more vram and longevity. Now i know some people have answered this question before here on this forum but i have a different situation. I can buy the 980 Ti for 9.99 US, or the 1070 for 9.99 US. (The shipping price is the same)

There about the same in performance so should i get the 980 Ti or get 3-5 more fps with the GTX 1070?

I enjoy my GTX 1070 but If I waited until now I could have just gotten a GTX 980 TI for 0 instead of paying 5. At 1440P I haven't found a real difference in game benchmarks.

I have been wanting the Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1, but it rarely stays in stock. The card costs 9. Newegg has a GTX 980 ti on their shell shocker deal for 9. At this price, would it be worth getting a 980ti over the 1070? I play Overwatch competitively, as well as RPG's like Guild Wars 2. I don't typically play AAA games, but will be getting Battlefield 1 this fall. I play at 1080p 144hz with G Sync. Thanks!

Hello, I completed a build about a year ago and received great help from everyone on the site. I am now looking to upgrade my graphics card. Currently running 750ti, i5 4690k, msi X97 pc mate LGA1150 motherboard, and EVGA superNove Nex 650W 80+ gold power supply. My question is should I go with the popular well rated gtx 980ti or the 1070 which I might be able to purchase cheaper or around the same price as a 980ti, would like to spend no more than 0, any input is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Get the 1070, it offers better DX12 support, pascal technologies, better performance out of the box and lower power consumption, making it the most futureproof option out of the two.
A 980ti only supports DX12.1, which is a very basic level of DX12 support, and it does not perform very well under DX12 load.

I'm thinking of selling some of my computer parts to get a bit of cash and to have a more up-to-date graphics card but I don't know if it would be worth the time, effort or money to change the parts.
I currently have 2 MSI brand GTX 980 Ti GPUs, one of which is the gold edition, and I'm not sure what brand 1070 Ti to go for if I decided to get one.
I Generally use my computer for gaming and editing videos, and I care more about a high FPS (~120) than running in 4k or whatnot.

Thanks.

Depends entirely on the game. At best, you'll get about 70% support out of any DX11 game. For sli in that case, a couple of 980ti's will get better fps than a single 1080ti. On the other hand, for any DX12 title and more than a few games, sli support is beyond miserable and you'll get better performance by actually disabling the sli, leaving you with a single 980ti. Most games range from @30% to 60%.

Overall performance lies with a single card, it might lack in some games compared to sli, but generally keeps up with or even beats sli in a larger sense.

So I've been saving for quite a while now and I've got like 0 Max for a graphics card. I can't really go higher then that and because of all the graphics cards being gone I'm kinda stuck. So I was originally going to get a 1070 but they're anywhere from 0 to 0 right now. Buuuut I did find some used 980 TIs for around 0. Would it be a good idea to go for one of those instead or should I just wait it out? Also Im playing at 1080p and aiming for 144hz. Any help or input is greatly appreciated!

The 980 Ti and GTX 1070 have very similar performance. While 0 is way too much to spend. Based on pricing before the latest mining boon. If you simply can't get yourself to wait it out. Sure, buy that card.

Personally, I'd wait it out. Just get something like a used GTX 760 2GB model for 0. They are slow but decent enough. They are much faster than something like a GT 1030. When the craze dies down or manufacturers improve supply. You'll lose maybe reselling the 760.

Hi guys, i'm on budget for 2 above options as i'm gonna play games with 2560x1440 resolution at 144 Hz and i need to do SLI so i can achieve 70 fps and above for smooth in-game experience. I'm considering between doing SLI on 1070 or 980 Ti. About the price, i'm not gonna buy 2 980 Ti cards brand new. I'm gonna buy open boxed or lightly used for about 0 to 0 price range. Compare to 1070 new is not a huge difference. But i don't know which one worth the upgrade. Please help me with that. Thank you in advance!!

That's because DOOM has terrible SLI scaling as of now. If you look further down the page you'll see that the GTX 1070 SLI beats out the 980Ti easily such as in Ashes of the Singularity, BO3, ect. Even still, if you put the 980 Ti in SLI against the 1070 it would perform worse in DOOM. The point being made is that the reason the 980Ti happens to beat out the 1070 SLI in DOOM is because at this time SLI scaling is not optimized. Once it is fully optimized, it will easily beat out the 980Ti with little work.

Hi,

I'll buy a graphics card pretty soon, but I can't decide if I should buy gtx 1070 or gtx 980 ti.
Gtx 980 ti is considerably more expensive than gtx 1070, but I'll be buying a used one.

Right now, gtx 1070 costs 450 euros and used gtx 980 ti costs 350-400 euros in my country. The framerates are pretty identical but I'll buy a 1440p screen soon, and 980 ti has 6gb vram while 1070 has 8gb vram. Will that be a problem? Since 1070 is new, is it worth the extra cost to go with that one?

Thanks

Nevermind. I just looked it up and both are very similar, I was getting VR performance confused with real world performance.

The 980 Ti is a good option, the extra 2GB of vram won't be used in a very long time.

So i know they both have practically the same performance, one beating the other in some cases, and they'll both do the same in vr but I'm also considering maybe buying a 4k monitor and I don't know which would be the better buy. I know the 980 ti has 6gb of vram and the 1070 has 8gb but at 4k I heard it barely touches th 6gb mark. Plus on eBay I can get a 980 ti like cheaper than a gtx 1070. And I know your about to say "at that res you should really be going for a gtx 1080 or 1080 ti" but I can't afford the the 1080 or the 1080 ti so I'm stuck with this. I could really used some pro help.

It depends on how long it will take to get that extra , if it's like a week or so then I'd wait but if it's going to be like a month or longer then I'd go with the 1070.

hello guys,
I live in Greece, and the prices of the gtx 980tis dropped pretty rapidly. At the price of 480€ the options are the Gigabyte GeForce GTX980 Ti 6GB Gaming OC WindForce 3X and the EVGA GeForce GTX980 Ti 6GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+. The cheapest GTX 1070 that I'm planning to get is the GTX 1070 ZOTAC AMP!, which costs 550€, with the GTX 1070 MSI GAMING X being just, 30€ more expensive. (580€) Is it worth paying 70-100€ more for a GTX 1070? (The GTX 1070 MSI AERO costs 510€ and the 1070 ARMOR 530€, however I'm not interested in buying one of those, since a backplate isn't included.)

I have the 980ti and love it. So either card is a good choice.
My preference is the 1070 only because it will be more future proof.

I've saved a bit of money to upgrade my graphics card but I cannot decide on which one to buy.

I'm gaming with a 1080p 144hz monitor with a GTX 970.

I was leaning towards buying a GTX 1070 but I've just seen that the 980 TI has had it's price slashed drastically, and is around £30-50 cheaper than the 1070.

Although that amount of money isn't an issue, would i see such a drastic increase in performance if any if i choose to go with the 1070 over the 980 TI?

Furthermore, which is also a better future investment?

Thanks!

The 1070 without a doubt. While there might not be a very large performance difference today, older Nvidia cards underperform in DX12. This has been fixed in the new architecture. So, as DX12 games come out, the performance difference will increase significantly.
Plus teh new card draws less power and that means less heat and noise.

So, I'm considering buying either a 980Ti Extreme Amp Edition from Zotac, or an AIB/Founder's edition GTX 1070 and I'm seeing that prices are basically the same (ebay vs new). I'm also seeing that the 1070 is faster at stock clocks... However, the 980 Ti is an OVERCLOCKING BEAST!!

There's simply not a whole lot of information out there right now that pits a fully overclocked 980Ti vs a fully overclocked GTX 1070. Anyway, I don't know what to do... I intend to use this in a single GPU configuration for games, on a single 1440p monitor...my cpu is a 4.8Ghz 6700k, 16Gb DDR4

Any suggestions? Which do you guys think will be faster/better for me? I play mainly FPS games, DOOM, BF4, Battlefront, etc. Thanks!!
