Our Verdict: Upgrading from R9 390X to GTX 1060 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for GTX 1060 .

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 / Core i7-6700K @ 4.00GHz

At 1440p, GTX 1060 can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. It is clear that the GTX 1060 is a significantly more capable high-end card that can play AAA titles at 1080p/1440p with 50-60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is excellent for GTX 1060 against the competition in budget mid-range cards. In terms of memory, the GTX 1060 's 6144 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks.

AMD Radeon R9 390X / Core i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz

At 1440p, R9 390X can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. It is clear that the R9 390X is a significantly more capable high-end card that can play AAA titles at 1080p/1440p with 50-60 frames per second. It is worth noting that the R9 390X is a very power hungry card and requires a decent power supply unit. In terms of memory, the R9 390X 's 8192 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks. It is important to know that R9 390X 's max load temperature is very high and might require custom cooling solutions.

There are about 5 games in the world that run DX12 and/or Vulkan. There are hundreds, if not thousands of games that run DX11 and older, or Open GL.

Newegg is having a "sales event" right now, and I'm seeing a lot of GTX1060's right around the 0-0 mark. Much better than the 0 GTX1060's I was seeing two weeks ago. The cheapest 390x is still around 0, and the RX480's are right around the 0-260 range as well.

My vote goes to a GTX1060 if you're going to buy one in the next 3-4 days.

Are you planning to play in which resolution?

The 390X can handle 1080p in High settings without problems, may suffer with Ultra settings a bit tho

But i've been reading bad reviews from Mafia 3 and Quantum Break about their optimization. So they're not performing well at even high specs machines.

Aside from both, it will work nicely in 1080p/High
