I can't find any direct articles relating this fact. I'm currently running an AMD R9 290, but am noticing that it's starting to age on newer games. Would it be worth upgrading to a 1060? Or is that pointless and I should shoot for the 1070?

So no bottleneck then on a Haswell build. Now here's something else to consider: in some DX11 and DX12 games, the R9 290 is real close to a 1060 or even beats it, and the only upgrade in those game worthwhile would be going for a 1070. It may be earlier Nvidia driver issues, but in any event, here are two examples:

So I wounder if I should stick with my r9 290x or get myself a new gtx 1060. Is there any significant increase in performance, how's dx12 and should I wait another year to see how dx12 and new games work for amd and nvidia. If there is any comparison benchmark I would like to see it as well.

It's about a 12-15% difference. The DirectX 12 picture is too early to tell, but overall Pascal cards do very well. You'd be going from one of the all-time power hog heat generators to a super efficient next-gen architecture. And your Nvidia-leaning games list will definitely show some appreciation.

What would be the better buy a Powercolour R9 290 PCS+ OC 4GB(R3100/6,55) or a Zotac mini Gtx 1060 6GB(R4300/4,25),the R9 290 is recertified and the Gtx 1060 is new.

A 3GB version of the Zotac mini is also a option at (R3500/5,78) aswell as the RX 480 4GB at(R3599/4,80) but i prefer to have the higher vram versions so the RX 480 8GB(R4400/3,74) is also a option.

Assuming your PSU is capable of power either of them and that you're not going to see a bottleneck then you should go for the GTX1060 as it's the latest from Nvidia. I'd stay away from the R9-290 simply because it's more power hungry however what monitor are you going to use to in tandem with either of those GPU's?
