Our Verdict: Upgrading from RTX 3070 to RX 6800 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware.

AMD Radeon RX 6800

The good news is, with the release of the RX 6800 XT, the RX 6800 's price is getting more discount. The RX 6800 is much more expensive than the RX 5700 as it costs a whopping $ 579. Compare this to the RX 5700, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, which came originally at a price of $ 349, $ 399. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the RTX 3070 which costs $ 499.

Spec for spec, this RX 6800 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 5700, by boasting 2 % more fps. The RX 6800 has 16 GB RAM compared to the RX 5700 's 8 GB video memory.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 6800 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RX 5700, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Metro Exodus, Assassin's Creed Odyssey at 86 fps to 105 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 94 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Marvel's Avengers, Metro Exodus at 72 fps to 80 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 77 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Gears of War 5, Need For Speed: Heat, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Hitman 2, Far Cry New Dawn at 65 fps to 74 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 68 fps.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070

The RTX 3080 might be the high-end flagship of the latest Ampere set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most mid-range PC gamers. On the other hand, the RTX 3070 is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 499. The good news is, with the release of the RTX 3070 Ti, the RTX 3070 's price is getting more discount.

NVIDIA ’s xx70 cards have always been defined by mid-range prices with performance that knocks on the door of high-end graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the Ampere graphics card inside the RTX 3070, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend. In our synthetic benchmarks, the RTX 3070 blows past the RTX 2070, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER and, amazingly, even the RTX 2080 as well.

Unfortunately, gaming performance was not quite as impressive. Even if the RTX 3070 consistently delivers frame rate increases over the RTX 2070, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, the gain is not much to justify an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Metro Exodus at 83 fps to 99 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 89 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Marvel's Avengers, Metro Exodus at 69 fps to 77 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 73 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Final Fantasy XV, Hitman 2, Gears of War 5, Need For Speed: Heat, Far Cry 5 at 62 fps to 74 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 66 fps.
