Overall Combination Score 80/100 49/100 31 (39%)
Our Verdict: Upgrading from R9 Nano to RX 580 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for RX 580 .

AMD Radeon RX 580

AMD ’s xx80 cards have always been defined by mid-range prices with performance that knocks on the door of high-end graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 4.0 graphics card inside the RX 580, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend. The RX 580 is much more cheaper than the RX 480 as it costs $ 229. Compare this to the RX 480, which came originally at a price of $ 400. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the GTX 1060 6GB which costs $ 254.

Unfortunately, gaming performance was not quite as impressive. Even if the RX 580 consistently delivers frame rate increases over the RX 480, the gain is not much to justify an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Final Fantasy XV, Apex Legends, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, F1 2019, Forza Horizon 4 at 62 fps to 68 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 65 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Fallout 76, World War Z, Battlefield V at 64 fps to 70 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 66 fps.

AMD Radeon R9 Nano

The R9 Nano is much more expensive than the R9 390 as it costs a whopping $ 649. Compare this to the R9 390, AMD Radeon R9 390X, which came originally at a price of $ 329, $ 429. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the GTX 980 which costs $ 549. Unfortunately, gaming performance was not quite as impressive. Even if the R9 Nano consistently delivers frame rate increases over the R9 390, AMD Radeon R9 390X, the gain is not much to justify an upgrade.

Whether it is a justifiable upgrade depends on what graphics card you are upgrading from. Users with a R9 390, AMD Radeon R9 390X will not see a remarkable increase in frame rates after paying more for this R9 Nano. Similarly, those holding onto GTX 980 's GTX 780 graphics cards will not have a reason to jump teams yet. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Monster Hunter: World, Final Fantasy XV, Forza Horizon 4, GreedFall, Battlefield V at 61 fps to 65 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 63 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare, World War Z, Strange Brigade, Fallout 76 at 63 fps to 70 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 65 fps.

RX 580 vs R9 Nano with i7-7700K vs i7-4790K at 1080p and ultra vs ultra settings

AMD Radeon RX 580 / i7-7700K

At 1440p, RX 580 can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. It is clear that the RX 580 is a significantly more capable high-end card that can play AAA titles at 1080p/1440p with 50-60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is excellent for RX 580 against the competition in budget mid-range cards. In terms of memory, the RX 580 's 8192 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks.

AMD Radeon R9 Nano / i7-4790K

At 1440p, R9 Nano can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. Deciding whether to invest so much money in a high-end GPU like R9 Nano requires careful thought. With current 4096 MB RAM, the R9 Nano can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.
