AMD Radeon RX 470 / i7-6700K

For the most part, the RX 470 is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. With current 4096 MB RAM, the RX 470 can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 / i7-4770K

At 1440p, GTX 970 can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. It is clear that the GTX 970 is a significantly more capable high-end card that can play AAA titles at 1080p/1440p with 50-60 frames per second. With regards to max load temperature, the GTX 970 's cooling is excellent at keeping it cool and under control. This combination between GTX 970 and Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz has less than 8% bottleneck in many games and is perfect match to avoid FPS loss. I was originally going to get the xfx rx 480 for £182 but it was discontinued, which one of these cards should i get there is the sapphire rx 470 oc 4gb and sapphire rx 480 4gb and then there is gtx 970, bear in mind that i dont want to get any card over £200

Look for benchmarks of the games YOU play.
The best card may well differ.
as to vram, I think it should be a non issue.
VRAM has become a marketing issue.
My understanding is that vram is more of a performance issue than a functional issue.
A game needs to have most of the data in vram that it uses most of the time.
Somewhat like real ram.
If a game needs something not in vram, it needs to get it across the pcie boundary
hopefully from real ram and hopefully not from a hard drive.
It is not informative to know to what level the available vram is filled.
Possibly much of what is there is not needed.
What is not known is the rate of vram exchange.
Vram is managed by the Graphics card driver, and by the game. There may be differences in effectiveness between amd and nvidia cards.
And differences between games.

And... no game maker wants to limit their market by

Hi
I am torn between sapphire Rx 470 nitro + 4gb and gigabyte gtx 970 g1.
The second card(gtx970) is second hand but almost cheaper than Rx 470.
Given the fact that amd is better than nvidia at directx 12 and vulkan
What do you think I have to do?

COnsidering the horsepower difference between the two, i find only no. 4 to be valid. And yeah, if you plan on buying a monitor, getting the 470 because FreeSync monitors are way cheaper is very much merited because adaptive sync absolutely rocks.

Hi guys, i'm planning to buy a new graphics card to replace my ASUS DirectCU II TOP R9 280x 3GB but i can't decide for a GPU. I want one of these three GPU:

R9 390
RX 470

These are the components of my PC:

I will go from what I know.

I have the same processor and a GTX 970, and there is no bottlenecking at all, and I can play most games in really high quality, things like far car 4 at maximum settings, this is at 1080p as well.

The 4590 and 970 seems like a really good match-up to me, but you can get a GTX 1060 for an extra £30-40, and that is just a little behind the GTX 980, and you can get 6GB of VRAM.

So I would recommend either a 970, or a 1060. I don't know too much about AMD Cards, but the 390 and 470 are both really good cards. Although I would recommend a 480 over the 470.

Hey guys!!! Some doubts on gpu. Will the gtx 970 be better or Rx 470 on an i3 3220. Which will bottleneck more? I just want a rx 470 equivalent in nvidia since (Nvidia) drivers have better optimisations. Just want to play Just cause 3, Batman Arkham Knight, Watch dogs 2 etc. Above 40-45 fps is good on high settings. Will the Crimson drivers be okay on these games? Nvidia has total rollback of drivers and Geforce experience and kther stuffs too. Thanks a lot guys!!! Gtx 970 vs rx 470 ( ok with a good 500w psu?)

Not sure where this 30-40% bottleneck is coming from either.

If you grabbed even a flagship GPU you wouldn't see too much trouble with the i3. You might have 10-15 FPS less than someone running an i7, but it won't be quite as dramatic as only running 30-40% as fast.

The GPU will do its thing most of the time. Just needs the CPU to feed it a little data. The CPU becomes a limiting factor when you run a game that requires more CPU horsepower. On high end recently released games you probably will perform less than others with faster processors, but you will still have that GPU available for less CPU demanding games.

Bottlenecks really only apply at the top end when you are trying to get the most performance out of a system. When you are mixing new/old parts you get what you get. You should spend the most amount of money you are willing on whatever computer component you are buying to maximize potential performance.

So, I am looking to upgrade my GPU since my current one is a R9 270 and isn't doing as good now. My current CPU is a AMD FX 6300, I was going to upgrade it but I don't mind the bottleneck on certain games plus it seems good for many 1080P current gen games right now as well.

So, a recent friend of mine told me that the GTX 970 will just be a waste and I should just wait for the RX 470-480 and it comes out tomorrow I believe. I am not sure on what card to get now, what card would be better for gaming and would be good towards my CPU as well? Thanks.

Also, my motherboard is a Gigabyte 970A-DS3P so will the cards work in my motherboard as well? Thanks.

1) CPU bottleneck:
This seems to confuse a lot of people. A gtx970 is not "a waste" paired with an FX-6300 because there are many games with minimal CPU bottleneck. The 2013 Tomb Raider is one example:

In other games you may see over 40% higher FPS with a good GPU and recent i5/i7 CPU, but again it VARIES a lot by the game.

Future DX12 games will start to use the six threads in your CPU much better than they do know so you'll less of a bottleneck in many future games.

2) CPU bottleneck Part 2:
AMD's DX11 drivers are not nearly as efficient as NVidia's. So for games with a CPU bottleneck, the GTX970 is going to do better (relatively). Having said that, the RX-480 should do better in games that have minimal CPU bottleneck.

3) RX-480:
First, I'd get the 8GB version, non-reference such as Asus Strix (not 4GB, not reference).

We don't have all the RX-480 details but we do know:
a) much better DX12 support (when properly optimized for) due to ASync Compute, preemption etc than the GTX900 series and previous
b) 8GB VRAM is an option
c) VR support is better due to asynch time warp/preemption (though we don't know if there's a performance enhancement like the GTX1080/1070 has which can boost FPS by up to 1.6X due to rendering a single pass for both images)

d) other stuff: HDR, HEVC, higher bandwidth (all stuff for better monitors)
e) Freesync is cheaper than GSYNC (though still expensive. The one I recommend is 0USD. Asus, 27", 2560x1440, IPS). Note that not all Freesync works well. Must be at least 2.5X max to min (such as 30Hz to 75Hz range.) or there is no support below the minimum. Some are only 40Hz to 60Hz which is horrible.

Summary:
I'd wait for a good RX-480 8GB card.

Note that the consoles have a GCN GPU so game code is going to be optimized for this. In fact, the 2017, XB1 Scorpio appears to have an RX-480 GPU (as part of the APU). The new Polaris GPU's are slightly tweaked versions of the previous GPU's.

Now NVidia can and will have ways of performing tweaks so this is not to say that AMD is superior, just that the GCN architecture is in the current and updated consoles so there's an incentive to optimize for this now that DX12 is starting to allow more hardware level access.

So I'm working on building a computer and I'm in the process of putting the list together. I haven't purchased anything. What I've got on the list so far:

CPU (i5-6500)
Motherboard (MSI Z170A SLI)
16GB HyperX Fury DDR4 Ram
600W EVGA B1 PSU
Corsair Spec-02 case

Peripherals:
Mouse + Keyboard + Headset
24" ViewSonic FreeSync monitor.

All of the above totals roughly 0.
I'm wanting to keep my budget under 00, and I just need to decide on a GPU now.

I've had my heart set on the RX 480, but from what I've seen, they are either sold out everywhere or the prices are jacked up to 0+. Newegg seems to have reasonable prices under the 0 mark, but I'm not sure when they'll be in stock again.

So my question is this.
For maxed settings in games at 1080p, would the RX 470 be best? Or should I opt for a 970?

Or would it be better to play the waiting game for the RX 480?
