Our Verdict: The RX 470 is faster by 37% for 1440p gaming. The price/performance ratio is much better for RX 470 .

AMD Radeon RX 470

The RX 480 might be the mid-range flagship of the latest GCN 4.0 set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most entry-level PC gamers. On the other hand, the RX 470 is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 179. AMD ’s xx70 cards have always been defined by entry-level prices with performance that knocks on the door of mid-range graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 4.0 graphics card inside the RX 470, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend.

Spec for spec, this RX 470 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the R7 370, by boasting 2 % more fps. The RX 470 has 4 GB RAM compared to the R7 370 's 2 GB video memory.

In our synthetic benchmarks, the RX 470 blows past the R7 370 and, amazingly, even the R9 380 as well. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 470 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the R7 370 and it really justifies an upgrade.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Battlefield V, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Resident Evil 2, Strange Brigade, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 at 62 fps to 69 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 66 fps.

AMD Radeon R9 280

The R9 290 might be the extreme flagship of the latest GCN 1.0 set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most high-end PC gamers. On the other hand, the R9 280 is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 279. The good news is, with the release of the R9 280X, the R9 280 's price is getting more discount.

AMD ’s xx80 cards have always been defined by high-end prices with performance that knocks on the door of extreme graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 1.0 graphics card inside the R9 280, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend.

RX 470 vs R9 280 with i7-6700K vs i7-4770K at 1080p and ultra vs ultra settings

AMD Radeon RX 470 / i7-6700K

For the most part, the RX 470 is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. With current 4096 MB RAM, the RX 470 can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

AMD Radeon R9 280 / i7-4770K

It is worth noting that the R9 280 is a very power hungry card and requires a decent power supply unit. This combination between R9 280 and Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz has less than 8% bottleneck in many games and is perfect match to avoid FPS loss. This combination between R9 280 and Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz is a perfect match to avoid FPS loss. With current 3072 MB RAM, the R9 280 can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

Just as the title says is it expected for the rx 470 to be better than the r9 290/280x,and is the rx 470 8gb better than rx 480 4gb?

Exact stats are not known and you should wait for 29th of June for them, but leaks place RX470 quite close to RX480. Rx470 is going to be better than the cards you mentioned, and cheaper as well. But by better i mean similar speed to r290 now, but better speed in the long run, way better power efficiency and use of new technologies 290s do not have

My 280x died on my the other day, and I'm looking to replace it. I'd love to get a RX 480 but these RX 470's look really amazing and slightly cheaper. From what I've looked at they seem to be way better than the 280x and the 380x cards. Is that a correct judgement atm? Again I'd love to hold out for a RX 480 but just wondering on the RX 470. Thanks for your opinions

Hey there,Everything you need to know about the RX 470 can probably be answered by watching the following video: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7t6lN2-bK8)In short: The RX 470 outperforms the 280x and 380x comfortably, only falling short to the 390, which falls short to the RX 480.Here's a quick hierarchy (least to greatest):280x -> 380x -> RX 470 -> 390 -> RX 480Cheers mate, hope this helps.
