AMD Radeon RX 470 / Core i7-6700K @ 4.00GHz

For the most part, the RX 470 is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. It appears that the RX 470 is a more capable mid-range card that can play AAA titles at 1080p with 60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is excellent for RX 470 against the competition in budget mid-range cards. With current 4096 MB RAM, the RX 470 can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

AMD Radeon R9 280 / Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz

It is worth noting that the R9 280 is a very power hungry card and requires a decent power supply unit. This combination between R9 280 and Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz has less than 8% bottleneck in many games and is perfect match to avoid FPS loss. This combination between R9 280 and Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz is a perfect match to avoid FPS loss. With current 3072 MB RAM, the R9 280 can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

Just as the title says is it expected for the rx 470 to be better than the r9 290/280x,and is the rx 470 8gb better than rx 480 4gb?

Exact stats are not known and you should wait for 29th of June for them, but leaks place RX470 quite close to RX480. Rx470 is going to be better than the cards you mentioned, and cheaper as well. But by better i mean similar speed to r290 now, but better speed in the long run, way better power efficiency and use of new technologies 290s do not have

My 280x died on my the other day, and I'm looking to replace it. I'd love to get a RX 480 but these RX 470's look really amazing and slightly cheaper.

From what I've looked at they seem to be way better than the 280x and the 380x cards. Is that a correct judgement atm?

Again I'd love to hold out for a RX 480 but just wondering on the RX 470.

Thanks for your opinions

Hey there,
Everything you need to know about the RX 470 can probably be answered by watching the following video: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7t6lN2-bK8)

In short: The RX 470 outperforms the 280x and 380x comfortably, only falling short to the 390, which falls short to the RX 480.

Here's a quick hierarchy (least to greatest):
280x -> 380x -> RX 470 -> 390 -> RX 480

Cheers mate, hope this helps.
