i7-9700K
  • The i7-9700K has higher Level 3 Cache. This is useful when you have substantial multiprocessing workloads, many computationally intense simultaneous processes. More likely on a server, less on a personally used computer for interactive desktop workloads.

Good budget cpu cooler for i7-7740x?
Hey guys, i've got a couple of questions. For a base, here is my current rig minus the cpu (its the one im looking to get) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Gp6jvn .

I'm looking for a little more cpu power to go into my rig, but the only problem is that my motherboard is lacking the ability for i7. So i'd really love to see if you guys had any budget motherboard recommendations that would fit the circle?

Secondly, Im not trying to fix anything that isnt broke, so if the power supply can handle it im totally fine. Im not to experienced with power supply's and im not sure about the wattage and all of that madness.

And lastly, what would be a good budget (-) cpu cooler? Pcpartpicker is saying i need a seperate as it doesnt come with a stock cooler, so just looking for a friend that could recommend me some stuff. Good god, i cant believe you're still reading and thank you so much for giving me the time. Any insight helps! Thanks guys, Dylan.

Your motherboard DOES support i7 CPUs. Here t+is the full list of supported CPUs for that mobo:

Of course, H81 chipset cannot overclock, so it would be wise to get a non-K version of any i7 you have in mind.

I'd recommend i7 4790. But you will likely have to search for one 2nd hand, and even then they tend to be expensive.

i7 7740x possible PSU issue
the problem that im facing is during rendering in maya using my cpu utilizing all of my threads.

my cpu config is:
i7 7740x
gigabyte x299 ud4 mobo
16gb ddr4 ram
gigabyte wf3 oc gtx1080
250gb ssd + 1tb hdd
700 watts cooler master b700 PSU

When i put a long batch render sequence which goes on for hours for rendering, my pc shuts down or reboots randomly after just few hours of rendering without the processor over heating.. through out my processor doesnt cross 85 degree C. this problem only occurs when i am using all the threads for rendering even if render it using one thread less i am able to render for 12 hours straight without any reboot or issues and also gpu renders are no issue at all. So asked my studio it guy for his opinion. what he said was my power supply might me proving unstable if not inadequate as 700watts is enough but since it is not a gold certified psu so swapping it might help solve this issue. I have used this psu for my earlier system which was a i7 3770 with gtx 750ti and no such issue there for rendering using cpu. is this really a power supply issue? please help

Lots of PSUs tested very thoroughly by HardOCP; start your search from their thoroughly reviewed models. Choose a quality 700-750 watt model MINIMUM. If ever pondering a Vega, best to consider starting your search at 850 watts. Hoping to catch a 7900X 2-3 years from now when/if prices drop? they can potentially draw 250-300 watts alone when OC'd at peak...

Better to run a quality PSU at only 50% of it's rated watts capacity than to be hoping your PSU (which will be 3-5 years old someday) can sustain an 80-85% max rated load forever.

Better to have 200-250 watts to spare than wondering the cause of spontaneous reboots /freezes/brownouts later...

i7 7740x system reboot under load
i just bought a i7 7740x processor and while using softwares like maya to render using the cpu the moment the cpu is under load when i start the render the system freezes and resets its self while my cpu temp doesnt even cross 75 degrees. this doesnt happen if i use my gpu to do my renders, it runs fine. i face no such issue while gaming either. i am not overclocking any component here. please help

Well, it is hard to identify the problem without some testing. You can run some stress testing on the cpu and see if the shutdown happens when underload.

I7 7740x vs ryzen 1800x for cpu rendering?
I want to know what would be better for fast full load cpu 3d rendering using Arnold or vray in maya which goes on for 2 to 3days straight without reboots. An I7 7740x or amd ryzen 1800x as they belong to the same price range but vary in specs. And what ever processor I choose, I intend to keep using it for the next 4 years atleast.

For editing and rendering, more cores is better than faster cores
For vast majority of gaming, faster cores are better than more cores but some games can already run better on more cores.

The "better" does not mean it will suck big time for the other usage.
It will do just fine.

For price/performance value, there is nothing from Intel which beats the Ryzens.

Gaming on R7 1700 should be something like having an I7 7700 (no-K) but 1700 has more cores, which should allow to perform a lot better on rendering work.

Have been looking to build new PC and these look very similar the X being slightly quicker but should I go the 7700 route or is the new batch worth waiting for?

Depends what you're doing: if you're gaming & have a set budget then definitely go 7700k. There's going to be a huge difference in X299 motherboard prices so you'll end up paying quite a bit more for your CPU/mobo combo & those two CPUs will be identical in games & you'll get no real benefit from having spent way more on the X299 motherboard. You'll be much better off getting a 7700k, a sensible price motherboard, & the best possible GPU. If you spend the same budget on X299 you'll be stepping down on your GPU & you'll have a worse gaming experience overall.

All that said, if money isn't much of a problem then obviously X299 has an upgrade path whereas the Z270 doesn't really so X299 is the better choice in that situation, but then buy a CPU with more cores if you're getting X299 so you can get the advantages of the platform plus some more "future proofing".

Also I wouldn't rule out a Ryzen 1700 clocked to 3.8-4.0ish. For the most part that'll perform pretty similar in games & has double the cores ready for the future there are a few (usually older) games that are very Intel friendly though so if there's something you play that's on that short list then that's something to consider.

What can you connect with an i7 7740X?
I've been planning to upgrade for several months now and I felt like X299 could be a good choice. I know the i7 7740X only has 16 PCIe lanes, but would that be enough for a GTX 1080 Ti, M.2 SSD, and a USB 3.0 front header?

Why get the 7740X? That CPU makes almost no sense as it has nil resale value and disables tons of features on X299 motherboards. Unless you are absolutely certain that you will get a higher-end model in the not-so-distant future, it makes no sense. And if you do plan to upgrade the CPU, you may be better off eating the 0-500 extra up-front instead of burning 0 now and another 0+ later.

To make things worse, there have been rumors that the 12-18 core models may require a new socket revision, which means LGA2066 could be a dead socket by this time next year.

The value proposition is what I worry about here.
While the 7900X is no doubt the best atm, and I don't want to sound like a broken record; there's simply no proposition for it to be made what with a 1700 running 16 threads for less than half the price, and far cheaper mobos and threadripper coming out soon which will offer much better value for money as well as PCIE lanes and quad channel memory which should be nice.
It all depends what @OP plans to use the rig for. At that price point SLI 1080 Tis is pretty much a must though, which is another thing.

A 7700k is easily enough for gaming, in fact, it's regarded as the best cpu for gaming at the moment, it slightly outperforms the ryzen cpu's. It is also pretty good for multi core performance, but not the best. Ryzen or x299 would be best, I would buy ryzen 7 instead of x299 though. x299 is just a waste of money.

If you're doing video editing/rendering, don't get Intel. The processor you're talking about is 4 cores and 8 threads, while a similarly priced Ryzen CPU will have 8 cores and 16 threads, and its video editing performance will annihilate the 7740X. It's much better you get a 1700 and use the stock cooler. Even at stock frequencies it would beat the crap out of the 7740X. When doing video editing, more cores means more performance almost always. Considering you are editing in 4K, you need all the performance you can get, so its either Ryzen 7 or the overpriced 8 core 7820X, which costs 0(insert cash register sound here). So it's best you get the 1700 - better performance for lower costs.

i7 7740X uses LGA 2066, so isn't compatible with your motherboard.

Keep the 7700k.

Would I need watercooling for the i7 7740x?
I'm planning to buy this processor and from what I've looked at it runs at a higher ghz than other intel processors at 4.3 GHz. Will I be able to get away with using air cooling on this processor? I was thinking of getting this cooler for it:

The problem is X299 motherboards are much more expensive than Z270 motherboards. The i7 7700k can be put on a 0-120 board and have full overclocking capabilities, same deal with the 8700k and a Z370 board. The absolute cheapest X299 board is 0 and the cheapest one that isn't a horribly cut down low quality product is probably closer to 0-300.

Even with the Amazon discount, you're not saving money because of how expensive the board is. Unless you can get an X299 board for really, really cheap, the 7740x is not worth getting.

No. While personally I'm a fan of AIO's, especially when it concerns enthusiast class boards that might run into ram height issues and/or extreme OC, in this case that Scythe Yuma has the Arctic beat hands down. It's one of the top performing aircoolers there is. Because of price, and it's ability, the Yuma is a sought after cooler and many times its not in stock, sold out, so I'd jump quick if that's what you want.

Looking to buy an Intel I7 7740X
